Set for Japan

Made for how Japan invoices.

Consumption tax

Consumption tax is 10%, with a reduced 8% on food and drink to take away and on newspaper subscriptions.

Registration no. (T)

Under the Qualified Invoice System, registered businesses show a registration number: the letter T and 13 digits.

JPY and local dates

Amounts are in Japanese yen, in whole units with no decimals, and you can pick another currency on any invoice. A bank statement you upload is read the way banks in Japan write dates.

Financial year from 1 April

Invoice numbers start a new series each April, so the first invoice of the year is OG/26-27/0001.

Getting paid

  1. Send it yourself

Share the invoice from your own email or any app on your phone. The track turns to Viewed when your customer opens it.

  2. Your customer sees how to pay

Customers pay by bank transfer (furikomi), often at the end of the following month. Print your bank account details and set the due date to match.

  3. Match it from your statement

On Pro, upload your bank statement. Dates written like 2026-10-05 are read correctly, and you match each payment in one click.

Keeping track

FAQ

Questions from Japan.

Does Openn Invoice make a proper invoice for Japan?

Yes. Add your Registration no. (T) in settings and each invoice is titled “Invoice”, with consumption tax worked out line by line at the rate you pick (10%, 8% and 0%) and totals in Japanese yen. What it has to show in Japan is listed on this page. Check with your accountant for your case.

Does it file my consumption tax return?

No. Openn Invoice makes invoices and shows who has paid. It does not file returns or keep full accounts. Paid plans include a tax report and CSV downloads to hand to your accountant.

I am not registered for consumption tax. Can I still use it?

Yes. Leave the Registration no. (T) empty in settings and send invoices with no consumption tax on them.

Can I bill customers outside Japan?

Yes. Pick the customer’s country and currency on the invoice. A customer abroad is billed as an export, with no consumption tax added. You see the reason on the invoice before you send it.

What does it cost in Japan?

Free covers 5 invoices a month. Pro is $9 a month or $79 a year, with unlimited invoices, recurring invoices and bank statement matching. Prices for Japan are in US dollars and exclude local tax.

Are the app and the invoices in Japanese?

Not yet. The app and the printed labels on invoices are in English. What you type, such as item descriptions, notes and terms, can be in any language.
