MVA

25% is the general rate, 15% applies to food and drink, and 12% to passenger transport, hotels and cinema tickets. Locally the tax is called merverdiavgift (MVA).

Org. no. (MVA)

The organisation number is nine digits. VAT-registered businesses write the letters MVA after it.

NOK and local dates

Amounts are in Norwegian kroner, and you can pick another currency on any invoice. A bank statement you upload is read the way banks in Norway write dates.

Financial year from 1 January

Invoice numbers start a new series each January, so the first invoice of the year is OG/2026/0001.

What an invoice needs to show in Norway.

An invoice in Norway carries:

  1. An invoice number and the invoice date
  2. Your name and organisation number, followed by MVA if registered
  3. Your customer’s name and address or organisation number
  4. A description of the goods or services and how much was supplied
  5. The time and place of delivery
  6. The price, the MVA amount in kroner and the due date

Questions from Norway.

Does Openn Invoice make a proper invoice for Norway?

Yes. Add your Org. no. (MVA) in settings and each invoice is titled “Invoice”, with MVA worked out line by line at the rate you pick (25%, 15%, 12% and 0%) and totals in Norwegian kroner. What it has to show in Norway is listed on this page. Check with your accountant for your case.

Does it file my MVA return?

No. Openn Invoice makes invoices and shows who has paid. It does not file returns or keep full accounts. Paid plans include a tax report and CSV downloads to hand to your accountant.

I am not registered for MVA. Can I still use it?

Yes. Leave the Org. no. (MVA) empty in settings and send invoices with no MVA on them. Registration in the VAT register is required once sales pass NOK 50,000 in 12 months.

Can I bill customers outside Norway?

Yes. Pick the customer’s country and currency on the invoice. A customer abroad is billed as an export, with no MVA added. You see the reason on the invoice before you send it.

What does it cost in Norway?

Free covers 5 invoices a month. Pro is 9 $ a month or 79 $ a year, with unlimited invoices, recurring invoices and bank statement matching. Prices for Norway are in US dollars and exclude local tax.

Are the app and the invoices in Norwegian?

Not yet. The app and the printed labels on invoices are in English. What you type, such as item descriptions, notes and terms, can be in any language.
